The story of Shango (Yoruba Ṣàngó) is riveting, every bit as exciting as any Norse saga and it is a major reason why I started the Afrikkan Pantheon graphics line.

Yoruba god of thunder and lightning, Ṣàngó is also revered as the god of justice and consort of the goddesses associated with the River Niger. He was not born a deity but is the evolved form of an ancient king of Oyo, a major Yoruba city in present day western Nigeria.
Ṣàngó was the fourth king of the Yorubas and was deified after his death. As a man, he was reputed to be a very brave warrior with a fiery temper and wild disposition. He ultimately committed suicide and took his place among the Orisas (gods) as the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning. His symbol was a double headed axe that symbolized his thunderbolts

Ṣàngó was said to breath fire and control lightning even while he was human so I have made his body elemental, not constituted of skin and bone. His mask, accessories and tunic are based on those depicted on traditional Yoruba and Benin bronze sculptures. The double axed headdress is a typical symbol for Ṣàngó and the “planetoid” necklace symbolizes the cowrie shells he used for divination. The faces on the headdress are based on Yoruba masks and depict Timi and Gbonka, both great warlords when Ṣàngó ruled Oyo as a human.
