A divine treasure!

Words almost can’t describe how beautiful this two-toned agate ring is! Originating in the 1860’s, this ring is crafted in sterling silver, with a modern casting of a Victorian Shank. It’s exceptionally weighty, but that has everything to do with the remarkable two-toned agate cameo on the gallery ring.

Depicted in exquisite relief along the agate is the side portrait of Dante Algheri – the Italian poet who is responsible for one of the most iconic works of all time: The Divine Comedy. It is truly a rare treat to come across such a massive scale cameo of the famed Italian poet.

For the curious and intrigued, Dante Algheri is – in no uncertain terms – an absolute icon. Not only deemed the “Father of the Italian language” and “Il Somma Poeta” (The Supreme Poet), Dante’s depiction of the afterlife in The Divine Comedy has influenced much of Western art and literature.

On this cameo, Dante is depicted with a furrowed brow, and a vaguely stern expression on his face (an expression seen in many of his portraits, mind you)! He is also adorned in an embroidered tunic and a Medieval Florentine hat. The most important detail is on his head; like in all of Dante Algheri’s portraits, he is shown here adorned with a crown of laurels. This is an exceptional detail, as laurel garlands are the symbols of poets. Together, these details make for a striking and superb visage indeed!

Also striking is the two-toned agate. Dante’s cameo itself is a rich bronze color, while the setting underneath is a milky pearlescent white. It’s highly peculiar to see two toned agates, especially constructed in this way! It is more common for the cameo to be white while the setting is darker toned. It makes for a lovely juxtaposition on this ring, further emphasizing Dante’s mystical demeanor, and reputation as a masterful mythmaker.

At home behind museum walls, or a personal antique collection – this piece would make a wonderful treasure for any connoisseur or art history lover alike!
